This house underwent a massive renovation with the exception of the library where the original dark paneling was to remain. The program for the fireplace was to cover the existing brick façade, maintain the terra-cotta tile hearth, and to complement a large Oriental rug chosen for the room. For the design we elected to use a ginkgo leaf motif glazed in marigold to contrast with the dark walls. We extended the tile into the firebox to cover the brick as well as lend more visual weight to the relatively narrow surround.
