The Odyssey for Ceramic Arts, a local ceramic school in Asheville, North Carolina, invites
artists from around the country to teach workshops and take classes
throughout the year. The owners of the school, Brian and Gail McCarthy,
seeing a need for nearby housing, purchased and renovated a run-down
farmhouse and one-time parsonage. Brian and Gail invited several
local tile artists to design fireplace surrounds and bathrooms
for each of the four guest rooms. The fireplace surround in this room
is quite narrow whereas the hearth is relatively large. We chose a 4" format
and placed our maple and oak leaf tiles on the diagonal to create
more energy and movement in the narrow space. The diagonal format
is reiterated on the hearth with forest green field tile and several
playfully placed terra-cotta tiles. Lastly, a border of 2"
maple leaves finishes out the project.
